Honeycomb + Squadcast Integration: Routing Incident Alerts Made Easy
Table of Contents:

Honeycomb is an application monitoring tool that helps DevOps and SRE teams to operate more efficiently by offering rich observability solutions and intuitive team collaboration. It helps understand complex relationships within your distributed systems and troubleshoot issues accordingly.

Squadcast is an end-to-end incident response tool. Built with an SRE mindset, it streamlines all the incident response activities. Squadcast aligns all your teams towards a common organizational goal of better reliability.

With the Honeycomb-Squadcast integration, you can now route detailed alerts from Honeycomb to the right users in Squadcast, so you can leverage Squadcast’s incident response capabilities. With this integration, you can use Honeycomb as an alert source and create a Squadcast Webhook trigger in Honeycomb.

    Integrate Honeycomb with Squadcast

Using Honeycomb as an Alert Source

Step1: From the navigation bar in Squadcast, on the left, select Services. Pick the applicable Team from the Team-picker on the top. Next, click on Alert Sources for the applicable Service.

Step2: Search for Honeycomb from the Alert Source drop-down and copy the Webhook URL.

Note: To activate the alert source (indicated by a green dot - Receiving alerts against the name of the Alert Source in the drop-down), you can either generate a test alert or wait for a real-time alert to be generated by the Alert Source.

An Alert Source will be activated if there is a recorded incident via that Alert Source for the Service in the last 30 days.

Create a Squadcast Webhook Trigger in Honeycomb

Step1: Login to your Honeycomb dashboard. Head over to the Account settings and click on Team settings.

Step2: Under the Integrations section, click on Add Integration.

Step3: Choose Webhook as Provider and fill in the Name. Paste the previously copied Squadcast Webhook URL in the placeholder for Webhook URL. Fill in the Shared Secret, then click on Add.

Step4: Under the Triggers tab, click on New Trigger. Choose the dataset of your choice and click on Make Trigger.

Step5: Under the Triggers section, set the Name and Description of the trigger. Choose the State as Enabled. Set the query, frequency and duration for the trigger. Then click on Add Recipient.

Step6: Choose the Integration created earlier as Recipient and click on Add. Finally, click on Create Trigger.

There you go! Your Honeycomb-Squadcast integration is now complete. Whenever Honeycomb fires an alert, an incident will be created in Squadcast for it. Also, when an alert is resolved in Honeycomb, the corresponding incident gets auto-resolved in Squadcast.

Honeycomb is a powerful monitoring and observability tool, and integrating it with Squadcast can help enhance your incident management requirements and improve your DevOps and SRE processes. This brings us to the end of this blog on Honeycomb-Squadcast integration.

Squadcast is an incident management tool that’s purpose-built for SRE. Create a blameless culture by reducing the need for physical war rooms, unify internal & external SLIs, automate incident resolution and create a knowledge base to effectively handle incidents.
